Honouring Saskatchewan’s Farming Trailblazers
Saskatchewan Outstanding Young Farmers
Saskatchewan Outstanding Young Farmers (SOYF) recognizes young farmers who are quietly making a profound impact on their farms, communities and the future of agriculture in Saskatchewan. These individuals may not see themselves as extraordinary, but their dedication and innovation make them true trailblazers in the industry.
Canada’s Farm Show (CFS), Regina, SK, presented by Viterra is proud to partner with SOYF to celebrate these humble innovators, who are transforming the agricultural landscape through their unique approaches to farming.
The 2025 nominees are:
- Brady & Lindsay Funk, Braylin Acres
- Marc & Cheryl Norleen, 4G Land & Livestock
- Steven & Danielle Malo, Malo Farms & Wolf Creek Bison
Along with a spirit of excellence and leadership, SOYF program nominees often stand out because of their belief that what they do is simply “part of the job.” Many do not view themselves as exceptional; rather, they find ways to improve their farm operations driven by their desire to do things better or more efficiently.
The SOYF process, which includes both a regional and national competition, encourages farmers to recognize the innovation, resilience, and commitment that often go unnoticed in their everyday work. Whether it is investing in new equipment, prioritizing soil health, embracing technology or restructuring their business to ensure long-term sustainability, each nominee brings something unique to the table.
Canada’s Farm Show provides a platform for these outstanding farm business leaders to be recognized for their contributions while also offering an opportunity for others to learn from their examples. It is a chance to connect, share experiences, and inspire fellow farmers. It will foster connections not just between young farmers, but also between agribusinesses, sponsors and key stakeholders in the agricultural industry. These connections lay the groundwork for future collaborations and growth.
As farmers across Saskatchewan gear up for the upcoming growing season, Canada’s Farm Show and Saskatchewan Outstanding Young Farmers invite them to attend this year’s Awards Gala and Luncheon to celebrate the achievements of young agricultural leaders, strengthen networks within the industry and further position Saskatchewan as a leader in global agriculture.

Hands-On Workshop to Help Farm Families Tackle Transition Planning
Workshop: Bridging the Gap
Canada’s Farm Show (CFS), Regina, SK, presented by Viterra, offers new programming designed to help farm families navigate one of the most critical aspects of farm management—transition planning.
Farm Management Canada’s Bridging the Gap workshop seeks to help bridge the gap between generations of farmers to provide Canada’s farming future with the best chance for success. They invite families to work together on essential farm transition strategies with guidance from industry experts.
This interactive session will address challenges like:
– Overcoming transition resistance
– Tax planning
– Structuring businesses to support retirement
– Ensuring fairness for farming and non-farming children
“Heading into a new growing season, farmers have a lot on their minds,” says Nick Oakley, Business Development Lead at Farm Management Canada. “Not knowing how to approach farm transition is just one more thing to worry about. Parents often have one vision for the future, while their children have another. Without practical tools and guidance, families struggle to communicate effectively, which leads to tension and trying to ignore the issues.”
The numbers highlight the need for action. Only 12 per cent of Canadian farmers have a transition plan, with another 13 per cent actively working on one. With farm values often in the millions and ten millions of dollars, the stakes are high.
“What is fair isn’t always equal, and what is equal isn’t always fair,” adds Oakley. “Bridging the Gap gives families practice navigating the complexities of farm transition. Participants leave with a take-home workbook and valuable tools to keep the momentum going when they get home.”
Led by experts in accounting, finance, and communication, the workshop includes:
– Sessions on farm transition readiness and planning
– Tools for building a transition team and working effectively together
– Group discussions and opportunities to share insights and ask questions
Who Should Attend?
Farm families of all sizes and types are encouraged to participate.
“This workshop is about equipping families with resources to protect their legacy and secure the long-term sustainability of their operations,” says Oakley.
