140 Years of REAL Stories

As we celebrate 140 years of bringing communities together, it is an opportunity to reflect on the journey that has shaped our organization.

Established in 1884 as the Assiniboia Agricultural Association, our roots run deep, intertwining with the very fabric of Regina’s identity. This year marks 140 years for REAL, evolving into Canada’s largest interconnected event complex. Every milestone speaks volumes about the spirit of community that defines us and is at the heart of all we do.

REAL, a not-for-profit corporation, operates and maintains the 102-acre REAL District on behalf of the City of Regina. The corporation was formed in 2014. It is important to recognize that the land on which REAL District is situated is Treaty 4 territory and the traditional homeland of the Métis.

The Assiniboia Agricultural Society organized Regina’s first agricultural fair, held near today’s Victoria Park. In 1895, the fair’s location moved to its present site at the REAL District, accommodating exhibits and visitors. Over the years, the site expanded, hosting events large and small, including the World’s Grain Exhibition in 1933.

From the 1950s onwards, the REAL District underwent significant development, adding facilities like the Exhibition Auditorium, Jubilee Building, and the Canada Centre. The property continued to grow, with additions like the Affinity Plex in 2005 and the Co-operators Centre in 2010.

2017 marked a critical year with the addition of the International Trade Centre and the brand-new Mosaic Stadium which saw Garth Brooks perform as well as the new home to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Today, the Brandt Centre is not just a venue but a hub for sports, recreation, major concerts, and community events, including hosting the 2024 Montana’s Brier.

The site hosted a variety of acts including circus animals when The Exhibition first started and now, as Queen City Ex, hosts performers such as Johnny Reid and MC Hammer in 2009, Jason Derulo in 2022, Flo Rida in 2023 and Ludacris in 2024.

There is a lot to look forward to as REAL aims to continue its legacy of community spirit for years to come.

To our loyal patrons, sponsors, and countless individuals who have contributed to our success over the years, we extend our deepest gratitude. You are the beating heart of REAL and our 100-acre District, and it is your unwavering support that fuels our continued growth.

As we toast 140 years of memories and moments that matter, let us renew our commitment to building a future where community thrives, and memories are made.
